Hunkemöller joins Science-Based Target initiative

Hunkemöller is excited to announce they have joined the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi), taking a giant leap forward in its commitment to combat climate change as part of the companies Together Tomorrow journey. By setting greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2035, Hunkemöller reinforces its dedication to reducing carbon emissions through a science-based approach.

“Our journey towards sustainability has already begun, with significant strides in reducing greenhouse gases across our operations. Now, as SBTi members, we are determined to accelerate our efforts, spanning our entire value chain and products, to make a substantial impact and shrink our CO2 footprint”, says Anke Fransen, Sustainability Manager at Hunkemöller. “Together with our stakeholders, let's create a cleaner, healthier world and pioneer innovative solutions for a low carbon future.”

A sustainable transformation

Science-based targets align companies with the goals of the Paris Agreement, aiming to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) guides companies in adopting emissions reductions and net-zero targets based on climate science. “As we embark on this sustainable transformation, we are embracing ESG-conscious and responsible operating models that benefit not only our company but also our stakeholders and the communities we serve”, continues Anke Fransen. Hunkemöller is committed to transparency and will diligently gather data, develop tools, and track emissions, aiming to disclose its total emissions by 2024. Subsequently, it will establish 10-year reduction targets across all three scopes of the GHG Protocol and submit them for approval to SBTi by July 2025 at the latest.

The roadmap:

  • Calculate the global emissions footprint, considering data from all countries Hunkemöller operates in, to establish baselines for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders, conducting a comprehensive analysis of the value chain to identify significant emission sources and determine the necessary actions to reduce them.
  • With the guidance of SBTi, setting ambitious targets to reduce emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, ensuring the efforts are aligned with the SBTi guidelines and to be achieved by 2035.
  • Communication is key! Keeping the internal and external stakeholders informed about the targets, progress, and achievements on an annual basis, fostering transparency and accountability in the Hunkemöller journey towards a sustainable future.
  • Join us on this incredible journey as we pave the way for a greener, more resilient world. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and create a legacy for future generations.
